Kindergarten

k

I absolutely LOVE Kindergarten, especially the homework kits. Each kit comes in different container, and has a theme. For example, a cooler, a sewing kit, a shoe box, and a laundry basket. Each kit includes books and games that teach me math, reading, and geography.

My teacher Andrea is so creative. We’ve made puppets for every letter of the alphabet. We trace, color, and cut our animals and put them on sticks. My favorites are Sydney the Snake and Thai the Tiger. Andrea sends music files home to mom and dad so we can sing a song that teaches the sounds of the letters. And then we practice our handwriting for each letter in upper and lower case.

We even planted a garden at school, with each of us caring for our very own plant. Mine’s kale.

Summer always comes late in Santa Cruz, and the Fall has been filled with fantastic beach days, often with Ben and Owen! I had my first sleepover at their house, so mommy and daddy could go to a party in San Francisco.

I’m an orange/white belt now at karate, really improving my focus and even practicing with a staff. The best part of the class is the warm-up because each of us takes a turn pretending to be a creature, while the class has to guess what we are. Daddy took me for a manicure to have my nails painted green so that I could be a peacock!

We spent lots of leisurely time in the spas, including an entire Sunday at the oldest Turkish thermal bath, where old Hungarian men played chess and mom and dad drank champagne and beer. I also enjoyed a couple nights in our luxury hotel steam and sauna (no pics, of course, as Finnish-style nudity is quite normal there). It was such a relaxing vacation, and a welcome break from the demands of Kindergarten.

Pre-K Summer

This is my summer off before school starts! I left Montessori school in May, so it’s four months before I’m starting Kindergarten. Until then, no routine, just lots of lazing around, sleeping in, and watching cartoons until noon : -)

To kick off the summer, I had a huge Birthday bash! We rented a cabin for the weekend at the KOA Santa Cuz/Monterey Bay, with 30 kids and their parents. We had a barbeque, prosecco, and an ice cream bar. We flew airplanes, went in the pool and hot tub, played on the giant bouncy thing, and took a train ride. All my best friends were there: Niko, Ben, Owen, Branson, Miles, Omari, Jack, Freya, Bodhi, Brooklyn, Bodie, Noah, Jason, Eliza, and Sitka!

Mom and dad loved partying with all my friends’ cool parents! It was 3 solid days of fun with all my new toys to play with… a kite, telescope, and bug-sucking vacuum! More Legos, puzzles, transformers, and trains! Dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs, and a dinosaur t-shirt! Random, mischievous things like my rubber snake and whoopie cushion! And best of all: my new skim board!

I went to my first Summer Camp! We took the city buses all over town… to parks, museums, rollerskating rinks, swimming pools, and movie theaters!

School Days

Mommy and daddy are so proud of my report card!

Since the new year, I’ve been mostly busy learning new things and getting smarter!

At school, we learned about dental health and nutrition, and a dentist came to talk to us about the importance of taking care of our pretty teeth. I wonder why mommy gives me so much candy, because my teachers say that it’s healthy food that gives me energy and keeps me strong.

Our teachers started to compost in the school yard. Daddy’s been taking me to the dump since I was a baby, so I already know a lot about landfills and why we should recycle. In our garden, we have three guinea pigs: Peppa, Clover, Diggy, and Huey (now dead).

gopher2

Our garden plants have taught us about the important job that stems have in providing  plants with food and water. We did a science experiment with different stems and watercolor and watched the color get sucked right up through the veins and the stem of the plant all the way to the tips of the leaves!

I’ve spent countless hours doing maps of the continents, tracing the borders and coloring the countries, and cutting and gluing tiny squares of paper with the country names. They’re a lot of work! When mommy goes to Sweden, I know exactly where she is because I know Europe! I especially love doing maps of South America, and learning about the rain forest and the many creatures that live there, and huge, dangerous reptiles and animals that can camouflage (like jaguars)! Here are maps of Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America:

asia

South America

I enjoyed learning all about Antarctica and the arctic and that the temperatures are much colder than Santa Cruz. I was amazed to learn that the ice can be miles and miles thick! We learned about the animals that live in Antarctica and did our very best to carry an egg on our feet, like a penguin! We also learned how animals stay warm and did a fun science experiment with blubber (lard) and very cold ice water. We tried to see how long we could last in the ice water without a layer of blubber. Now we know how seals and penguins can survive.

We learned about jellyfish and humans and all sorts of different animals and whether they’re vertebrates or invertebrates. We also studied birds and their different types of beaks, claws, and feathers. I loved listening to their bird calls! Why does mommy get so scared when birds fly into our house? Birds are my friends because they’re living dinosaurs!

My teachers explained about Martin Luther King Junior and how he helped to create equality for all people. We talked about love and learned to draw beautiful hearts on our valentine’s cards, and we made a friendship chain. We celebrated Chinese New Year and got lucky red envelopes, and learned about the panda bears in Asia. We studied the islands, volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis in Japan. We made sushi balls and had fun using chopsticks and making origami.

April 1st was my last day at Little Acorns Montessori school, and I will miss Ms Brittanie, Ms Michelle, Ms Maia, and Mr Teran.Goodbye!

LAM2

I’m now enrolled in kindergarten at the Santa Cruz Children’s School (K-G6). Here are my classes: geography and world cultures, sports and physical education, mindfulness, ethnobotony and gardening, physics and astronomy, life sciences, math games, Spanish. history, theater arts, and vocal music. The only thing I won’t be able to do yet is learn to play the musical instruments, not until grade 1, when they’ll give me a flute and access to the piano.

To prepare for big boy’s school, mommy took me to get my hair cut!

haircut.jpg

On the home front, I’m still the Master Builder. Daddy and I spent weeks sorting through thousands of Lego pieces and cross-ticking them with the constructions (mommy calls them “instructions,” but she’s wrong).

I like going to the Learn to Discover Center in the Capitola mall. It’s really a terrific place to visit, with all kinds of activities and teacher support. Mommy can leave me there for an hour or two, while I learn programming, robotics, and engineering. Here I am building an alligator and using a computer to make his teeth chomp!

robotics

I had to say goodbye to my beloved “Fishy Fish.” We found him upside down in the fish bowl, wedged between rocks. We knew it was coming because he chewed off his own tail and he stopped looking like a pretty Siamese fighting fish.We took him to the ocean and the waves took him to sea.

In February, I stayed with Grandma and Megs the Dog so mommy and daddy could go to the annual Hemlock Gong Show. We went to Harrison Hot Springs and swam in the steamy pool!

I have lots of play dates with my friends. Ben and Owen had a birthday party at a camp site, and we brought our trailer there to stay overnight with them. We swam in the pool and sat in the hot tub in the pouring rain in the dark! And Niko slept over at my house, and we stayed up until almost midnight before crashing in my bed. Sometimes Branson and I go for hikes and bike rides together.

Gena, Johnny, and Sitka came to visit us and we had a wonderful time together riding bikes to the beach and having fires in the back yard. I took care of the baby and helped him play with wooden toys.

On a closing note, I just want to say, “I’m good to my momma!”

I love Fall for so many reasons, but mostly because of all the candy at Halloween! Branson was my favorite: a Transformer!

I was a Brave Bot to get my shots!

Mom and dad came to parent-teacher conference, and they were so pleased with Ms. Brittanie’s report: Nov2015 report card

I’ve been helping daddy dig trenches in the back yard and fill them with truckloads of gravel. We also built a garage to cover the boat for the winter.

We went to a pumpkin farm and got lost in a maze of hay bails. Mommy and I dug the seeds out and roasted them.

It’s that time of year where we’re staying home a lot, doing indoor things like baking bread and muffins.

At school, they’re teaching me to sew, so I made a little pillow for my teddy. I sewed tight stitches so the rice stuffing stays inside.

On cold days, Daddy takes me to the park, to the beach, and then to the hot tub to warm up.

We had Thanksgiving twice. For the long weekend, we went camping in our Burning Man trailer at Sunset Beach. Branson’s mom made an amazing turkey dinner and roasted the turkey over an open fire. We played on the beach and flew kites while our moms drank mimosas.  The next weekend, Jason and Eliza came over for a big bonfire and champagne-basted turkey.

To count down the days to Christmas, mommy hung chocolate-filled Advent calendar balls on the tree so I ate one every morning. We don’t have a chimney, so mommy said that Santa Claus will slide down a rainbow instead!

On Christmas eve, we smashed walnuts and sipped whiskey, and tracked Santa’s route on mommy’s computer.

And then Christmas finally came! Santa brought a remote-controlled robot dinosaur that I named Chomper. So far, I’ve taught him to sit, dance, run, burp, and fart. I got books, stickers, special rocks, a Jenga game, and a fossilized shark tooth. Mommy and daddy cursed Santa for bringing K’Nex, which they hated putting together. We walked to the park in my new yellow rubber boots, splashing all the way.

Courtney and Justin came to visit and brought me The Good Dinosaur from Disneyland! We had a great time together at the Aquarium.

And now we’re going to end the year with mom off work for a whole week, spending time together at the swimming pool and on our bikes. Yay!

Porcupine Power!

The highlight of the summer was our family reunion at grandpa’s house. I spent a week with my Uncle Terry, Auntie Alice, and my cousins Tami and Alexa. We went to Okanagan Lake every day and practiced swimming to the dock. The girls are really strong swimmers and terrific coaches! We played in the sprinkler, caught spiders and grasshoppers, went to the petting zoo, and baked cookies and birthday cakes with grandma.

What a wonderful surprise when Uncle Doug arrived, unexpected! Auntie Gail also surprised Terry with a beautiful fish quilt that’s almost as nice as the “I Spy” quilt she made me when I was a baby (which I still sleep under!).

It was good to get back home though because I always miss my friends, especially Dashin and Branson. I like to go swimming and bike riding with them. I love learning so many new things at school. Did you know there’s another world under the sea, and that the ocean has a midnight zone? I also enjoy going to the gym for Parents’ Night Out, cuz there’s a pizza party and crafts. I have a pretty busy social calendar, actually. At the end of every day, I bring home presents for mom and dad… things I’ve made all by myself.

dadI spent many nights spinning on the disco floor of the Burning Man trailer this summer, as mom and dad prepared for their trip! Dad built speakers that inspire me to break-dance!

breakdance2The Grandmas came to look after me for 10 days, while mom and dad partied with their friends. They did a terrific job, putting a little more dough on my belly and arranging play dates for me. We played CandyLand and Dominos, and made lots of puzzles, and I looked after Meggie the Dog.

I always look forward to crazy weekends with Jason and Eliza (who just got engaged!). We have silly times together, drinking bubbles on the beach, shooting at targets, and breaking plates 😉

sea_serpentFor Mother’s Day, my teacher gave me a quiz called Fill in the Blanks. I’m pretty sure I got an A:

My mom is 45 years old.
My mom likes to work and go to the beach.
My mom has purple eyes.
My mom’s birthday is on 162 years.
My mom was born at the fish aquarium.
My mom’s favorite food is salmon.
My mom likes to help me when I’m on fire.
My mom is the best at reading to me.

Here are Mommy’s favorite things I do and say:

Spreading my Legos over every inch of the dinner table, “I need my personal space.”
“Can I be your pet T-Rex? Cheetah? Lapdog?”
Gazing at the sky, “I see a sea dragon” and “I see a tornado.”
Sleepwalking into the living room, “I just had the most wonderful dream, but I can’t remember what it was.” (Then curling up on the floor and falling asleep again.)

Now that I am four, we have very grown-up conversations:

(I put an ice cube in hot water.)
Mommy: “Are you conducting an experiment?”
Me: “What’s an experiment?”
Mommy: “It’s when you test a theory. Uncle Terry would be so proud. Do you know what a theory is?”
Me: “Is it an aminal?” (I can’t pronounce this word.)

These are highlights from my Spring report card:

Language and Synthesizing Sounds into Words: “Rudy has wonderful, expressive language, verbalizes needs and wants, and uses newly learned vocabulary. He has great receptive language, and follows complex sets of directions. He is working on his phonetic letter sounds.”

Mathematics: “Rudy has amazing one-to-one counting from 1-20 and he understands the concept of zero. Rudy is working on his pencil grip for writing, and does well with chalk and sand tracing.”

Motor Skills: “Rudy has great gross motor control and understands his body in space (he’s aware of things around him). He has good fine motor skills, wrist movement, and 3 finger grasp. Rudy has enjoyed beginning sewing and will soon progress to rice bags. Mommy can look forward to an eye pillow soon!”

Sensorial (Colors and Shapes): “Good concept understanding and nomenclature. Rudy has progressed beyond the base sensorial knowledge and is starting to use the materials in variation.”

Geography: “Rudy loves using maps and has good recognition of land and water forms. He is learning about sedimentary rocks, the Solar System, and continents.”

Social/Emotional: “Rudy is a kind, loving, thoughtful, and curious guy! He is a quick learner and a good friend. Rudy is respectful towards his teachers and he is a self-guided student. He follows classroom ground rules. He listens, focuses, and engages in circle time. He verbalizes his needs and handles frustration well. He recognizes emotion and is very empathetic. We love having Rudy in our class!”

Everything is Awesome!

Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas! It all went by so fast.. I’ve been so busy partying with friends. I’m such a socialite!, always busy entertaining at our house or going to birthday parties.

tom_tenI dressed up twice for Halloween! In the daytime, I was a giraffe and Mommy took me downtown Santa Cruz to trick-or-treat. It was an easy score because all the business people loaded goodies into my backpack. I bumped into Dashan and we got ice cream together.

I’ve been going to lots of birthday parties too. My favorite thing about Little Acorns Montessori is that I’ve made so many friends. I love making balloons and picking out presents to bring to their parties, especially because mommy usually buys me the same present! I’ve celebrated birthdays with Brady,  Bodhi, Owen, Benjamin, and Branson.

Here are some of the cute things I say:

  • “Do you love me more when I’m good?”
  • “I’m so itchy! These critters are bitchy, junky bugs!”
  • (Like a true American) “Yah, sure!”

  • (While pooing) “This takes too much emergy!”
  • (While bathing) “Time to clean all my aminals!”

– running up and down the pier to stress out the quiet fishermen

– sitting up at the Yacht Club bar listening to dad and Jason chat while drinking beer and shots

– getting popcorn from the office and eating it in the parking lot where people fly remote-control airplanes and helicopters

Wendy and Devin came to visit for a long weekend. Wendy is almost as good at construction work as grandpa!

We took our boat to San Francisco for Fleet Week, and saw navy ships and the Blue Angels! We had a dress-up party with Wendy, Devin, Jason, Eliza, Leti, Jeff, and Kat! Then I stayed overnight with Leti and Jeff in the City!

I also stayed overnight at Leti’s and Jeff’s house in Redding, and had fun sleeping in a tent by the Sacramento river. I met Max and we played bubbles and swam in the pool.

Mom and I have spent a couple weekends together, just the two of us. After we go jogging or swimming, we ride to the toy store. Sunday mornings, she likes to drink mimosas and build Lego fire airplanes and flatbed tow trucks.

We often go out to lunch, and I load my chariot with tons of toys to keep myself entertained until my dessert arrives.

Mom and dad both like to put me to work. I’m good at windexing, swiffering, and watering.

Mommy and daddy finally got their citizenship! Not sure why it took them 9 years… I got mine, no questions asked!

Here are some things I say that make mommy laugh:

  • While sitting red-faced on the toilet: “This is taking too long. It’s wasting my time. It must be 16 pounds!” (In fact, it was.)
  • After puking in my own bed, and then again in mom’s and dad’s bed: “Where are we gonna sleep now?”
  • When asked to clean up my toys: “Not gonna happen. Not happening.”
  • When mommy spots an airplane before me: “Ah, my didn’t notice that!” And when I see one before her: “Ha! You missed it.”
